+++++
-and the news is on the tv in the background, screen flickering with every bump we hit, lines crawling across the tv and cutting right across the reporter's face as he talks about floods and fires and screaming and crying and dead people. or so it was before i stopped watching. old hands in an old lap, shoulders sagging and eyes peering up. you sit, you sit there, the two of you, round the booth style table fitted in the bus. his eyes shine, fucking twinkle, and your lips pull that little smirk, that twitched hint of a laugh, a smile. you hold hands over uneaten breakfast and he pretends to read your future in your palm, the fucking lines in your hand. fingerprints travelling down tracks, and you squirm because it tickles, i know, i'm trying it on myself, but you don't pull away. he's touching your hand but he's looking into your eyes, looking into your eyes like i wanted to. can't tell a future like that. everyone's future is the same anyway; we're all going to die eventually. don't need to be special to know that.
there's an explosion on-screen. i watch, it's easier. the reporter reels off numbers and statistics. i stand up and stretch; neither of you so much as look my way when i yawn.
"you're almost five more times likely to be murdered than to die in a flood." i say absently. "and there's only a fifty percent chance the killer will be caught."
you both notice me that time, glaring with matching looks of disgust.

im squeeing to you now about the whole omgitslikethegoodficfromyearsago im just gonna say i love this style, it all flows and theres a sense of something going wrong (which i loved in fics) that chance that the character isnt perfect or trying to be and their just trying to survive whilst watching everything around them change anyway
