Why I'm not where you are

-

Noda carries around a lot of fashion magazines. And while it would be right to assume this is because she is considering a future career in fashion design, it also wouldn't be the only reason she does so.

Sawada frequently catches Noda staring at the model pages. With eyes glancing too far down the page to be admiring anything but the long legs. Except perhaps for the socks the girls are wearing.

...Sawada has her doubts.

-

"Hey Noda, are you coming?"

"In a bit; I'll catch up with you."

Sawada watches Uchi, Kuma and Minami shrug an acceptance and walk away, too busy rushing to the gate to watch the boys get out of school to worry about why Noda would voluntarily stay in class longer than necessary.

Sawada considers the direct approach, just walking up and asking Noda what's going on - which sometimes works, and sometimes gets a short sharp response, but before she can, Noda is out of her line of sight.

"Yankumi," she says hesitantly, "can we talk?"

-

"Yankumi?" Uchi stutters in disbelief. "What advice could you possibly want from Yankumi?"

"Well, she's pretty cool-" Noda begins, and meets a wall of skeptical faces. "Not like that!"

"Like what, then?" Sawada asks, picking at her fingernails with the same level of disgust.

"Like... Open-minded." Noda says finally.

-

"If I ask you something, you'll tell me the truth, right?" Sawada asks. She feels Yankumi's eyes on her, taking in everything - the arms folded across the chest protectively, the foot angled out where she stands.

"Depends what you're asking," Yankumi replies, shuffling the papers on her desk so hard that they start to concertina at the edges. Whenever Yankumi tries to stay cool Sawada becomes certain of the enormity of what she is hiding.

"I think you already know," Sawada replies firmly, but quietly. Yankumi meets her glare, opens her mouth, closes it again. Her lips twist themselves into a mini knot, and she takes a deep breath before replying with finality.

"It's not for me to tell."

-

"So, you like Fujiyama-sensei," Sawada says as she slides into her chair. Noda nearly falls out of hers.

"What? What do you mean?"

Sawada snorts.

"Do you really want me to explain myself further?" She eyes the door, and Noda glances round to see the other girls waltzing in.

"...About Shizuka-chan. They wouldn't understand," Noda hisses, turning her back on Sawada and smiling as widely as she can for the benefit of the others.

"Wait," Sawada hisses back, leaning over the desk to poke Noda in the shoulder, "what makes you think I do?"

The last line is perfect! I just love the implications of it.

That's why I stopped there!

Not because I had no idea where it was going and no plot and it ran away from me soon after I started writing and took on a completely different turn!

Because I MEANT TO! ;D

Of course. It is a good ending? ;)

Fics like to do that to you. It's just lurking there in the back of your mind, waiting to come out.

I agree, the last line is *excellent.*

I admit I had a bit of trouble wrapping my head around the pronouns, but I'd *love* to see more from this universe.

The amount of times I almost wrote HE. Nearly everytime!

Usually, when I write girl!verse, I tend to give them girl's names similar to their original names, to keep things a bit clearer, so perhaps if I continue, I'll do that :)
