Don: Aren't we going? Luka: I know it's harsh, but tomorrow this planet might not even exist anymore. Joe: And it will become one of the Empire's colonies. Ahim: Just like our home planets.
Don is the only one who doesn't seem to have any personal response to planets being destroyed by Zangyack, which supports my idea that his isn't the same story as the others - the Gokaigers defending a planet under attack and recruiting.
My headcanon is that he was an apprentice engineer whose parents had died when he was a teen, and who had apprenticed him to a master engineer only just before that (long enough for him to have adjusted to not living with them, and old enough not to transfer his parental needs onto his master once they are gone). A man who mentored him, a man with a galaxy-wide reputation, which is why the Gokaigers were headed to their planet with Galleon technical difficulties. They go looking for the master who has just died of a sudden illness (am thinking the Zangyack are responsible for this - poisoning or somewhat - but that perhaps Don doesn't know it, maybe he doesn't ever find that out), and find Don instead who Marv harrasses into looking at their ship even though he is all flustered and stammery and not at all sure he is worthy to carry on his master's name. "You know more than any of us do, which is good enough for me! We need your skills." (And then when Marv realises most of what Don does is panic and hide behind other people it's already too late; he's made him a Gokaiger XD) The crew call him Doc out of deference to his engineer skills, having discovered a certificate his mentor was preparing to give to him very soon, once he had completed his training. It's still Don's most treasured possession.
The Goikagers discover the Zangyack are headed their way, into this part of space, and ask Don to make the decision of whether to stay with them or not. Don replies, "I have nothing worth sticking around for", and so never really stops to think about the fighting the Zangyack part of being Gokai Green until later. (Also because thw Zangyack haven't invaded yet I think Don doesn't stop to think about the fact they are possibly leaving his planet behind to be conquered. Although the Gokaigers have a grduge against the Zangyack, Marv's desire to find the Greatest Treasure often overrules the urge to stand up to the Zangyack).
