fic_promptly: K-On!, Ritsu, the first time she picked up a drumstick.

"Mio, come on!" Ritsu won't admit she is whining, even if her mouth is forming a pout. She waves the notes in her hand in Mio's face. "I have money this time and everything!"
"Oh, okay," Mio sighs. After all, this is only the third time they've been to the music shop this week.
Ritsu spent two weeks initially just standing outside and breathing all over the window as she stared in at the shiny drum-kits. Once they had actually made it inside the shop Ritsu could've spend hours just touching each part, running a finger around the edge of a tom or tapping a cymbal with her finger and giggling at the half-sound that would shudder out of it in response. She would've sat down and played, only the staff refused to give her a set of sticks to use if she wasn't going to pay for them.
Now that Mio thinks about it, Ritsu didn't even have that much money in her hand-
"Ritsu!" She shouts, stopping in her tracks. "What exactly are you buying?" She smiles hopefully. "A drum kit to practice with?"
Ritsu gives Mio one looks and bursts out laughing. Her face balloons, cheeks filling with the chuckles she is trying to hold back as she wraps her arms around her tummy. Mio is so trusting, too trusting.
"Just where would I have gotten the money for that?" She asks. "But at least I can buy some sticks now and they will let me try out a kit finally!"
"Ritsu, I don't think that's such a good-"
Ritsu has already dashed into the shop, grabbed the first pair of sticks she could find and slammed her money down on the counter by the time Mio catches up to her.
"Ritsu!" Mio gasps. "Didn't you even stop to check them? What if they are warped? What type of wood did you choose? And which size did you choose? Do you even know what the different sizes are for?"
"I like the feel of these," Ritsu replies, resisting the urge to stick her tongue out at Mio. How come she always knows so much? She isn't a drummer. Ritsu rolls the drumsticks in her hands. "They're fat and solid, and what use would those skinny ones be? When you're hitting things all the time they'd just snap!"
"The way you're going to use them they would," Mio mutters. Ritsu decides to pretend she didn't hear that. She clutches the sticks in one hand, curling her fingers around them. They're cold, and so perfectly smooth. Not really what she was expecting at all, but then Ritsu never stopped to think about what she was expecting from drumming, drum sticks, a kit, any of that. It still seems like it'll be fun though. She sets her sights on a drum-kit in the corner and charges off towards it.
"Excuse me, Miss," one of the staff stops her with a hand on the shoulder. "I'm going to have to ask that you not touch our instruments. Customers won't appreciate having to buy a used item."
"But!" Ritsu splutters. "People try out guitars and things all the time! You even said when I had sticks of my own I could-!"
"Ritsu," Mio says, hurriedly going over to her and shuffling her towards the door. "Strumming a guitar won't do any actual damage, and people like to test the weight of them in their hand. You've never hit a drum in your life until now. They're probably worried you'll break it. And they know you don't have the money to pay for it!"
Ritsu struggles against Mio all the way out of the door, and she only lets Mio win because she knows even if she gets back inside they won't let her play. She sighs, as long and as loud as she can, just so they all know what a disappointment everything is to her.
And yet... She does still have her drumsticks tightly in her hand. They're already starting to feel like a friend.
"I've been practicing with my hands, tapping out beats and everything," Ritsu says as Mio leads her away. "I'm sure I wouldn't have done anything bad."
She pulls her best pitiful face - widening her eyes until they sting like she's going to cry and letting her bottom lip tremble. Mio should know better, but it seems to be working.
"I have an idea," she says finally. Ritsu brightens, but it turns out it isn't exactly what she was expecting. "Follow me. We're going to the park."
