Telephones and Microphones

-

Sanada blurts it out as soon as the ringing stops and the phone is answered. It's been so long since he's heard Yukimura's voice, let alone his laughter, that Sanada gets caught out listening to it, hysterical and shuddering down the phone, for a good ten minutes straight before he remembers to be suitably annoyed.

"Seiichi-" he interrupts, and Yukimura stifles his giggles instantly. There's still static on the line that sounds suspiciously like muffled chuckles though. "What?" Sanada asks, tightening his free hand on itself until his knuckles start to hurt, "do you think it is that ridiculous? I have a reasonable voice, you know. Better than reasonable, I suppose, or else this opportunity would not have come along."

He barely ever gets even slightly impatient with Yukimura, but distance makes the words come more easily, and he's tired and run-down and laughter at his strange new career is not what he wants to hear. Even Renji managed a firm congratulations and a smile before he left.

When Sanada thinks back, it's possible that the smile was covering laughter, and that Renji made his quick exit to fall to pieces in the nearest alleyway. The point being that even if he did find it amusing, he didn't let on in front of Sanada.

He is strangely appreciative of the attempt to save his feelings, while at the same time he knows Seiichi would never attempt to do so and is grateful for that too, in a way.

"In fact," Sanada begins when there is no quick reply, "when we, the team, used to go out for karaoke I do remember at least one reluctant compliment, from both Niou and Kirihara. Or are you going to tell me now they were dared to do it? And the whole world is making a big joke of me?"

Silence still. Sanada stops abuptly to listen a little harder into the phone to make sure it hasn't cut off. He can hear slow and steady breathing, the kind Yukimura uses to cool down after a match, or the kind he uses when he's trying not to lose his temper with someone. With most he would just let rip and let them deal with the consequences; with Sanada, with Renji, he thinks before he speaks.

Sanada looks down at the ground and begs it to swallow him up whole.

"I think," Yukimura begins, so softly Sanada has to press the phone harder to his ear and is thankful for the numbing pain it brings; he feels it is his due for his outburst, "your singing voice is quite accomplished, Gen." Sanada keeps holding his breath, afraid to breathe. There's a 'but' of some sort coming to him.

"I was just thinking how funny it is," Yukimura continues, and suddenly his voice contains a smile, "because I was going to call and tell you... There's a charity record of some sort being made and I've been asked to take part in the chorus. Perhaps you'll be involved too, now? We can meet up or something. Talk."

"Ah, yes, of course," Sanada mumbles in reply. He touches the back of his hand to his cheek and tries to gauge how warm it is, how red his face might be. Yukimura keeps talking, making vague arrangements even after he admits he can't remember the date, time or location, even though he has been told several thousand times.

Sanada isn't the one to admit he has to hang up; he stays on the line far longer than he should, nodding along to Yukimura's words. Only when Yukimura says his goodbye does Sanada blink and realise what the word means.

"Oh, you're going?" He says stupidly, and Yukimura laughs again.

"Yes," he says, "and also, I laughed earlier not really because of the irony, but because when you told me you'd been signed to a record label, my first image was of you on stage in some kind of string vest and sequins combination."

Sanada is met with the dialing tone before he can stammer something like a reply, but all he can hear in his head are the echoes of Yukimura's laughter.
